Becoming a Notary Public
In Virginia, the Secretary of the Commonwealth is responsible for commissioning notaries public. You can find out more about becoming a notary and access the online application wizard at the Secretary’s website.
Vital Records—Certified Copies of Birth, Death, Marriage, and Divorce Records
In Virginia, the Department of Health’s Division of Vital Records is responsible for maintaining birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates. At the Division’s website, you can find instructions for requesting records by mail (1-to-2 week turnaround), by express delivery (2-to-5 business days), or in person at their Richmond office.
Department of Motor Vehicles—Driver’s License, Vehicle Registration, License Plates, State ID Cards
The DMV is responsible for services relating to vehicles and driver’s licenses, as well as state ID cards. In addition to visiting the DMV customer service center in Fredericksburg or Stafford, you can also access many services online or at the DMV Select locations at Fredericksburg City Hall or the Stafford Courthouse.
