Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell and other House Republican leaders on Tuesday renewed their call for Governor McAuliffe to begin an investigation into Planned Parenthood, following the release of a third graphic undercover video highlighting the abortion clinic’s practices.
From the Washington Post:
Republican leaders of Virginia’s House of Delegates renewed their calls Tuesday for a criminal investigation into the state’s Planned Parenthood clinics after the release of a third undercover video targeting the abortion provider.
The video released Tuesday shows lab workers using tweezers to sort through identifiable body parts in a petri dish atop a lighted lab table.
“Anyone watching those videos — seeing the tiny hands of a child on a petri dish — has to be shocked,” Speaker William J. Howell (Stafford) said in a conference call with reporters. “And hearing the casual nature of their conversations really is appalling.”
“Over a week ago we called on the Governor to begin a simple investigation to determine if the practices in the first video were happening in Virginia,” Howell said. “Since then, nine states and three Congressional committees have launched investigations. There is simply not any good excuse.”
House Majority Leader Kirk Cox (R-Colonial Heights) said, “Each of these videos has been shocking and painful in their own right. But when you look at them together, you see a repeated willingness by some of the top leaders of Planned Parenthood to disregard or at the very least, bend the law.”
“We have strict and tough regulations on abortion clinics in Virginia for this very reason,” said Delegate Kathy Byron. “The Governor himself said he’s confident these regulations prevent this kind of stuff from happening, but at the same time he’s trying to roll back these regulations. The Governor and Attorney General cannot have it both ways.”
“There is no excuse. The only excuse I can imagine, the only rationale is that the Governor has received almost $2 million in campaign contributions he got from the abortion industry,” said Chairman Tim Hugo. “He is protecting a campaign donor.”
Delegate Todd Gilbert said, “Planned Parenthood has shown us that at an institutional level, they are completely willing to disregard the law.”
