Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford) issued the following statement Friday on the retirements of Delegates Bob Brink (D-Arlington) and Algie Howell (D-Norfolk):
“On behalf of the entire House of Delegates, I want to thank Bob and Algie for their service. Both of these men have served the Commonwealth and their constituents well and I wish them the very best of luck in the future.
“I deeply respect Bob and his passion for public service. I have enjoyed getting to know him over the last decade. His experience and understanding of state government earned him the respect of his peers, and I know I speak for all when I wish him well.
“Algie and I have become good friends since he was elected to the House of Delegates. Algie’s story should inspire all Virginians. Despite numerous obstacles and challenges, he scrapped and fought to graduate high school and attend college at a time when that dream was simply out of reach for many African Americans. He served our country in uniform and fought for freedom in the Civil Rights movement. He is a man of strength, deep and abiding faith, and strong convictions. I am honored to have served with him and proud to call him my friend. We will miss his passionate and inspiring voice in the House of Delegates.”
