FALMOUTH, VA – Stafford County was awarded a $100,000 school safety grant Wednesday by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services for school security infrastructure improvements at more than two dozen Stafford County schools. The grant is from the School Security Infrastructure Improvement Fund created by the General Assembly during the 2013 session.
“The tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut led to a concerted effort by the General Assembly to invest in school safety across the Commonwealth,” said Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford). “We created the School Security Infrastructure Improvement Fund in order to provide localities with needed resources to improve school security. This fund allows schools to invest in hallway cameras, automatic locks on classroom doors, front-office buzz-in systems and other important improvements. These grants will help keep Stafford classrooms safe and secure.”
House Bill 2343 was originally proposed and passed by House Republicans during the 2013 General Assembly session. The General Assembly authorized $31 million, including $6 million specifically for this program, for school safety and security in the 2013 state budget. The General Assembly authorized an additional $6 million for school security infrastructure improvements in the 2014 budget and again in 2015.
